The Destructive Power of Pride

“The Destructive Power of Pride”

The power of pride. Have you ever saw the bumper stickers that say this statement about pride? I’ve seen them here in the USA and they boast about the power of pride. I personally believe it is pride that has caused a lot of problems for the USA and the teaching of people saying, “I’m so proud of you”. I just can’t see this lining up with Biblical counsel of what the Word of God says for us in our lives. I’ve heard people make statements such as: “Son, I’m so proud of you!” Well, what did our Father in Heaven say over His very own Son on the day when He was baptized? Luke 3:22 “…thou art My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” How about that? Our Father said over His only Son of how He was well pleased. He didn’t say in whom I am proud. Why? Well, does not the Word of God say that He resists the proud [1Pet 5:5] but gives grace to the humble? And does not it also say that death and life are in the power of the tongue [Prov 18:21]? I believe this is very key to why He did not say, “Son, I’m so proud of You.”

You may want to say… “Well, that was then and this is now and surely God doesn’t mind us pronouncing we are proud over someone does He?” Or does He? Our Father and Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever more in whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning. So why would He be saying something different now? I’ve even heard people say over somebody, “God is so proud of you.”. This just doesn’t line up with what the Holy scripture teaches. I don’t think this is being holier than thou with this thinking, but rather pursuing righteousness and the truth of what our Father has already revealed to us in His Word. Anytime we find ourselves compromising our standards or way of life as lining up with what the Word says, we leave the door open for more troubles. If we are not doing what the Word says, then we are deceiving our own selves [James 1:22]. What an ugly position to be in…deceiving our own self.

I do believe that pride can be found at the root of the majority of sins in a Christians walk with the Lord. Anytime we choose our own way over God’s way, that is sin and it is pride coming through. The spirit of pride does not want to do it another way but would rather do it the selfish way, that is our own fleshly way. I believe our Father did not want to pronounce that spirit of pride over His very own Son. Words have the ability to create and change our very own atmosphere we live in and the ability to edify and encourage the listener. Some may even want to say this: “Well, Gary you know when I say I’m proud of someone it means a different meaning than what is meant in the Bible and it does not represent the proud that God resists.” Well, you may think it means a different meaning but the devil is a legalist and he will hold us to our words and what they really mean. Sometime soon, I hope to do a journal on the etymology of words and present how the meanings of the words have changed through the years. It is a very interesting study.

I really believe what needs to take place again in Christians lives through out the world is the fear of the Lord. We need to grasp onto that concept, that is where wisdom begins. One of the reasons that God’s people came to worship Him with their lips and mouth but not with their heart was because the fear of the Lord was taught through mans precepts [Isa 29:13]. Man was teaching watered down truth of the Word of the Lord and His people had no real reverence toward Him because of this. I’m going to end here with this thought about pride and what our Father YAH says about it: [Prov 8:13] “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”
